Then the manufacturer asks: "What file format is this in?" If you don't know the answer — or send the wrong one — you could be looking at delays, extra conversion fees, or worse, a print that doesn't capture your design accurately.
Understanding 3D printing file formats for jewelry isn't just technical housekeeping. It's one of the most practical things you can do to protect your design intent and keep your production timeline on track.
The Most Common 3D Printing File Formats Used in Jewelry
Not all file formats are created equal, especially when you're dealing with the fine details and organic curves that define fine jewelry. Here are the formats you'll encounter most often:
- STL (Stereolithography): The industry standard for most 3D printers. STL files represent geometry as a mesh of triangles. They're widely compatible and easy to share, but they don't carry color, texture, or construction history. For jewelry casting models, STL is usually the go-to format — just make sure your mesh resolution is high enough to preserve fine surface detail.

What Format Should You Send Your Manufacturer?
The honest answer: ask your manufacturer first. Every workshop has preferred workflows, and sending the right format upfront saves everyone time.
That said, here's a practical rule of thumb:
"If your manufacturer uses Rhino or JewelCAD, send a native file. If you're unsure, export a high-resolution STL as a safe fallback."
When exporting to STL, pay attention to your mesh settings. For jewelry, you'll want a very fine tolerance — typically 0.01mm or lower — to ensure prong tips, pavé settings, and engraved text come out crisp. A coarse mesh will show visible faceting on curved surfaces, which is unacceptable in fine jewelry production.
Preparing Your Files for Resin 3D Printing
Most jewelry workshops use high-resolution resin printers — either SLA (stereolithography) or DLP (digital light processing) — to produce wax or castable resin models for lost-wax casting. These printers demand clean, watertight geometry. Before you send any file, run a quick check:

- Wall thickness appropriate for the material (typically 0.8mm minimum for castable resin)
- All design elements are joined, not floating separately
- Scale is correct — jewelry files are notoriously easy to accidentally export at 10x or 0.1x size
